What to do in Wageningen

The city of Wageningen dates back to the 13th century. In the first half of the 16th century Wageningen Castle was build and the fortifications were extended and improved. The shape of the fortifications is still visible in the canal around the city center. Remains of the castle and fortifications can be found at various locations.

The city center is within walking distance of the WICC. It has plenty of shops, bars, and restaurants. Wageningen and the surrounding area offer many cultural, natural and historic sites for you to explore on your own or with one of the excursions that will be organized.

Wageningen is a university town. Wageningen University & Research started in 1876 as the State Agricultural School. It focuses its research on scientific, social, and commercial problems in the field of life sciences and natural resources. It is widely known for its agriculture, forestry, and environmental studies programs. The congress is just before the start of the academic year. Around this time the introductory programs for the new students take place which gives the town a lively atmosphere.

Sculpture Gallery Het Depot

Sculpture Gallery Het Depot is a museological stage for contemporary sculpture and puts the artist’s development opportunities center stage: by people, for people. The collection of sculptures consists of torsos and fragments of the human body.

Sculpture Gallery Het Depot has three locations, connected by Arboretum De Dreijen. Villa Hinkeloord features a permanent exhibition of work by Eja Siepman van den Berg and temporary exhibitions in the downstairs space. Arboretum Hinkeloord is also part of this location of Het Depot. The main building showcases exhibitions of work by contemporary sculptors and an exhibition on both arboreta. Our building De Peppel houses a permanent exhibition of work by Emile van der Kruk, to be opened in March 2022. We also offer educational programs for schools in De Peppel.
